HEAD – Genève and Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts, London) are launching CONNECTIONS, an exhibition and educational workshop uniting 56 students from both institutions in a collaborative creative project.

What does it mean to belong in a world shaped by diverse cultures and shifting geographies? How can the traditions of the past inspire innovation for the future? ‘CONNECTIONS’ is an exhibition born of a collaborative workshop between Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD – Genève) and Central Saint Martins, uniting emerging designers to challenge these issues through the lens of contemporary jewellery.

Two Themes to Inspire Creativity

Here and There: the designers explored their cultural identity and geographical environment to develop their creative process. By revisiting traditional ornaments from their respective countries, they reflected on the concept of belonging and the opportunities offered by intercultural exchange.

Past and Future: the project merged traditional techniques with contemporary digital tools, such as artificial intelligence, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing. This intersection of approaches enables the development of new methodologies and forms of expression.

Inspired by traditional Swiss jewellery from Nidwalden costumes and Thai flower garlands, this hybrid piece blends two distinct traditions. Identical interlocking elements symbolise connection, reflecting the designer’s Swiss and Thai heritage. The design embodies harmony, cultural dialogue, and the vision of a globalised world where diverse identities unite to create something greater.

Heidi never had any jewellery, so the designer created some for her. A mix of jewellery and accessory, this piece blends traditional techniques with digital innovation. When our contemporary Heidi wears it, her bells rings, guiding her goats. Her braided hair swings freely, embodying the balance between traditional and contemporary Swiss culture.
