Café Monico – a central London institution and centre of Swiss-Italian gastronomy opened by brothers Giacomo and Battista Monico in 1877 – will be memorialised with a new green plaque.
Westminster City Council’s green plaque scheme was launched in 1991 to commemorate the diverse cultural heritage of Westminster and highlight the people and institutions of renown who have made lasting contributions to the area and wider society.
The new plaque on Shaftesbury Avenue will join another, already at home on the Strand, marking the impact of Ticinese gastronomy on London’s culinary scene in the 19th century – an impact which included making ice cream widely available to the UK public.
