On the road to next July’s UEFA Women's EURO 2025 tournament in Switzerland, Ambassador Markus Leitner travelled to Yorkshire to watch a clash between the hosts and the defending champions, with the Swiss national team taking on England in a friendly at Sheffield’s Bramall Lane.
In additional to Sheffield, the Ambassador visited Harrogate, Leeds and Wakefield – discussing existing Swiss ties and building new ones.
In Harrogate, the Ambassador visited Bettys, a Yorkshire institution founded by Swiss baker Frederick Belmont back in 1919. With five tearooms across Yorkshire, the company – which is still family-owned – also produces coffee and the iconic Yorkshire Tea.
The next stop was Leeds, where the Ambassador held bilateral talks with Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin. The pair discussed the rise of the space industry across both Switzerland and Yorkshire, financial services ties, and shared cyber-security strengths. Then it was off to Wakefield and the Hepworth Wakefield art gallery for an exhibition celebrating a century of surreal landscapes featuring works by Swiss artist Nicolas Party.
In Sheffield, the Ambassador joined Sheffield City Council Leader Tom Hunt for a working breakfast focusing on the city’s ambitious growth plans and Switzerland’s approach to governance, before coffee with the team at the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival and discussions of how to boost the Swiss presence at the UK’s leading documentary festival.
The UEFA Women's EURO 2025 tournament will run from 2 to 27 July 2025 across eight Swiss cities – find out more about the host cities, travel, and tickets.
