The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is held on 29 May to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world, for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honour the memory of those who have died while serving on peacekeeping missions.
Switzerland has a proud history of supporting peacekeeping missions and participated in a conference held in London to mark the occasion, organized by the Royal United Services Institute and focused on the theme of peacekeeper training.
Switzerland was represented by Col. GS Michael Freudweiler, who is currently the deputy commander of the Swiss International Command responsible for recruiting, training, deploying and conducting all peace support activities by the Swiss Armed Forces in many different parts of the world.
Our Defence Attaché Col. GS Bernard Jeanty had the honour of laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in London, paying tribute to all those peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of pursuing global peace.
